5 Common Myths About Physical Therapy—Debunked!

For many years now, physical therapy has helped millions of people move better, feel stronger, and recover from injuries – but there are still misconceptions about what PT is and who it’s for. Some people think it’s only for athletes or post-operative surgery patients. Others worry that it’s going to be painful. Even with its history and track record, the truth is that many people don’t realize just how versatile physical therapy really is. So let’s set the record straight! In this article, we’re tackling five of the most common myths about physical therapy – and giving you the facts you need to feel confident about your care.

Myth #1: You need a doctor’s referral to see a physical therapist

Not necessarily! In Florida – and many other states – you can see a licensed physical therapist without a referral from a physician thanks to what’s called direct access. This means you can start treatment sooner, which is especially helpful if you’re dealing with pain, stiffness, or limited mobility that’s affecting your daily life.

There are a few exceptions. Some insurance plans may still require a referral for coverage, and some states require a referral to a physician if the physical therapy treatment extends beyond 30 days and the patient hasn’t yet been assessed by a physician1 – but for many people, physical therapy is just a phone call away. If you’re unsure, we’re happy to check your benefits and help you understand your options.

Myth #2: Physical therapy is only for injuries or post-surgery

While physical therapy is definitely a go-to for recovery after injuries or surgery, that’s just one piece of the puzzle. PT can also help with chronic pain, posture issues, balance problems, and even everyday aches and stiffness. You don’t have to be recovering from something major to benefit. Many people even rely on physical therapy to prepare their bodies before surgery.

It’s also great for injury prevention and performance enhancement—whether you’re an athlete looking to move more efficiently or someone who just wants to stay active and pain-free. Physical therapy is about helping your body move and function at its best, no matter where you’re starting from.

Myth #3: Physical therapy is painful

This is a big one—and it’s totally understandable why people think have this belief. The truth is that physical therapy is not supposed to hurt. In fact, one of the main goals of PT is to help reduce your pain, not add to it. It’s estimated that as many as 1 in 5 Americans experience chronic pain2, and many of them trust physical therapy to treat it.

Now, some exercises or movements might feel a little uncomfortable, especially if you’re working through stiffness or recovering from an injury, but you should never be pushed into sharp or unbearable pain. Good communication with your therapist is key, allowing them to always work within your comfort level and adjust as needed to make sure you’re progressing safely and confidently.

Myth #4: You can just do exercises at home and get the same results

Home exercises are definitely a big part of physical therapy, but they’re just one piece of the puzzle. What you don’t get at home is the personalized assessment, hands-on techniques, expert guidance, and real-time adjustments that a licensed physical therapist provides.

Therapists are trained to spot subtle movement patterns, muscle imbalances, or alignment issues that a YouTube video or generic exercise routine can’t address. Plus, your therapist will track your progress and adapt your plan as needed, making sure you’re always on the right path – not just going through the motions.

Myth #5: Once you feel better, you can stop physical therapy

Feeling better is a great sign—but it doesn’t always mean you’re fully healed. Pain relief is often just the first step. The real goal of physical therapy is long-term recovery, which means restoring strength, mobility, and function so the issue doesn’t come back.

Stopping too soon can lead to setbacks or even re-injury. That’s why therapists create a complete treatment plan that continues beyond symptom relief, focusing on building a stronger foundation. Sticking with it until your therapist gives the green light helps you stay on track and keeps you moving.

As long as these myths persist, people may be avoiding the very treatment that will help their bodies move and feel better every day. Physical therapy isn’t just for injuries, it’s not supposed to hurt, and it’s definitely not one-size-fits-all. Whether you’re dealing with pain, recovering from surgery, or just want to get the most out of your body, physical therapy can make a big difference, and it might be easier to get started than you think.
