Heat, Hydration, and Muscle Pain: What Florida Residents Need to Know

Anyone who has spent time outside on a hot summer day in Florida knows how oppressive the heat and humidity can be. Trying to do a little yard work, playing a pickleball game, or even making a leisurely visit to a theme park can be a completely different experience than it is during cooler months.

While the suffocating heat comes as a surprise to no one, many people underestimate how much the heat and humidity can affect your muscles and joints, especially if you’re not staying hydrated. Dehydration doesn’t just make you thirsty. It can contribute to muscle cramps, soreness, fatigue, and a greater risk of injury.

Why the Florida Heat Hits the Body So Hard

As is often the case, the old cliché rings true: it’s not just the heat, it’s the humidity. The heat makes your body sweat, and the humidity makes it hard for that sweat to evaporate. This means your body must work harder to cool itself, leading to more sweating. Increased sweating means more fluid and electrolyte loss. Staying hydrated in these conditions is essential.

Muscles need adequate hydration to function properly. Without it, circulation can become less efficient. Muscles can become more fatigued. Any inflammation can feel worse. You may feel cramps and spasms. And this doesn’t just apply to athletes or construction workers; a leisurely round of golf or a casual walk in these conditions can lead to dehydration. It’s important to be aware of the danger and keep yourself hydrated even during light activity.

Dehydration is especially dangerous for infants, children, and older adults. In fact, older adults tend to have less water in their bodies in the first place and can often have conditions or take medications that make dehydration more likely1.

The Connection Between Dehydration and Muscle Pain

Muscles are largely made of water, and dehydration can have a major influence on how they function, impacting:

  • Muscle contraction
  • Oxygen delivery
  • Nutrient transport
  • Waste removal

Increased sweating can also contribute to an imbalance of electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and magnesium. This electrolyte imbalance can lead to cramping and stiffness. Mild dehydration, long before you feel severely thirsty, can already contribute to symptoms like increased soreness, neck or back stiffness, muscle fatigue, or even headaches.

Heat and humidity can also make existing pain worse. Pain from old injuries or joint inflammation can be exacerbated by dehydration. This can also affect pain induced by symptoms of chronic conditions like Tendonitis or arthritis2.

There are several factors that influence the effects of dehydration on muscle pain, including fatigued muscles providing less support and contributing to poor movement mechanics, or increased inflammation and reduced recovery capacity. Staying hydrated gives your muscles the best chance to perform at their best and recover quickly.

Hydration Tips for Florida Residents

We’ve all received advice on how important it is to stay hydrated in hot weather. This is not a controversial topic. Particularly in Florida, where we experience more hot and humid weather than in many other parts of the country, staying hydrated even during short, low-intensity activities can be critical. While these hydration tips may not be new, it never hurts to refresh our memories and remind ourselves of how to best protect our bodies from the Florida heat.

Keep these tips in mind this summer:

  • Hydrate before outdoor activity, not just during it
  • Drink consistently throughout the day
  • Increase fluids during high humidity
  • Replace electrolytes during prolonged sweating
  • Beware of dehydration caused by excessive alcohol or caffeine
  • Take cooling breaks
  • Wear breathable clothing
  • Avoid peak afternoon heat when possible

In most cases, water is sufficient to stay hydrated, but during longer or more intense activities, it may be wise to consider sports drinks or something to replenish electrolytes as well.

When Dehydration Symptoms Could Signal a Bigger Problem

While muscle pain and fatigue are annoying enough, dehydration can obviously lead to much more serious problems. Unfortunately, the more serious problems aren’t always immediately obvious. It’s important to pay attention to potential warning signs before serious heat-related illness claims another victim. Some warning signs that should not be ignored include:

  • Severe weakness
  • Confusion
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Unusually rapid heartbeat
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Dark urine
  • Pain that doesn’t improve with rest and hydration

It is sometimes a fine line between normal soreness from activity and something more severe. Pay attention to your body and stay hydrated. Heat exhaustion and heat-related muscle breakdown can cause serious problems. This can be especially important for people who work outdoors in the heat. When it’s a job rather than a chore or recreational activity, people may be more likely to “push through” minor symptoms and ignore warning signs. This is why the CDC published a warning about heat stress and workers on their website3.

Don’t Forget About Recovery

Another important part of staying safe in the Florida heat is recovery. This means taking time to rest and cooling down after activity. Use gentle stretching to keep your muscles flexible and of course don’t forget about hydration. Getting proper sleep at night can also help your body be more resilient. When it’s time to return to activity, do it gradually, giving your body time to adapt. If you are dealing with recurring muscle pain, don’t ignore it. Ignoring recurring pain can lead to:

  • Compensatory movement patterns leading to additional pain
  • Joint stress
  • Greater injury risk
  • The potential for chronic pain issues

Your best option is to take care of your body. Stay hydrated, take breaks, and give your body time to recover in between activities. If you find yourself dealing with recurring pain that doesn’t resolve after hydration and rest, don’t hesitate to reach out to a physical therapist for an evaluation. Confronting the pain quickly is key to making a quick and complete recovery.
