Osteoarthritis in Florida: Weather, Joints & Pain Management

Everyday life with osteoarthritis can be challenging, but when you live in a state like Florida, the weather can add another layer to the challenge. Many Floridians with joint pain swear they can “feel the storm coming” in their knees or hands, and there is some evidence that joint pain can be influenced by differences in humidity or barometric pressure.

With the pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility that comes with osteoarthritis, the sunshine state offers some benefits: warm weather, outdoor living, and year-round activity. It can also present some unique challenges.

Does Weather Really Effect Osteoarthritis?

Most of us have heard some anecdotal accounts of arthritis sufferers mentioning how they can feel weather changes in their joints, but is there any truth to it? Many studies done on this topic have had mixed results. Part of the problem is the many potential factors that may be in play, including temperature, humidity, precipitation, and barometric pressure. Is one of these factors the many culprit? Is it some combination of factors? Or is there nothing to it at all?

More recent studies seem to be zeroing in on an answer1.  A Dutch study reported that participants experienced an increase in pain and stiffness associated with rising humidity and barometric pressure, though the overall impact was small.

Another European study discovered a link between higher humidity and increased pain and stiffness, particularly in colder weather. A third study that focused on senior citizens also found a correlation between pain and higher humidity.

In each of these cases, the correlation is small, and the results are probably not significant enough to say with certainty that particular weather conditions can be linked to particular changes in joint pain. There does seem to be something to the claims, and it’s hard to deny that many arthritis sufferers re convinced that they can “feel” the weather in their joints.

What Does This Mean for Florida Residents?

Florida offers some advantages for joint health. Warm temperatures can ease joint stiffness for some people (though not all agree). This may be due to warmer weather allowing muscles, ligaments and tendons to loosen up2. Warmer weather can also improve circulation. It can also encourage physical activity as compared to cold weather. Consider, too, that sunshine also promotes vitamin D production, which supports bone health.

On the other hand, Florida’s climate may have some negative impact on your osteoarthritis. It it’s true – as many people report and some evidence suggests – that higher humidity can exacerbate joint pain, Florida may not be the ideal environment. Also, if the connection between barometric pressure changes and increased joint pain is true, storm season in Florida may bring some additional pain to osteoarthritis sufferers.

How Can You Manage Your Osteoarthritis in Florida?

There are some basic things Florida residents can do to manage their osteoarthritis. Following these tips may help make your time in the Sunshine State a little less painful and more enjoyable.

  • Daily Activity – Regular movement can reduce stiffness. Try some warm-up and stretching routines tailored to hot, humid weather. Try low-impact exercises like walking, swimming, or cycling.
  • Hydration & Nutrition – Staying hydrated in Florida’s heat is very important. Also, add some anti-inflammatory foods to your diet like leafy greens, fatty fish, or turmeric.
  • Smart Scheduling – Avoid exercising outdoors during peak heat hours. Use early mornings or evenings for outdoor activities.
  • Home Comforts – Use dehumidifiers to control indoor humidity. Use warm baths or heating pads to soothe sore joints.

Florida’s climate can be both helpful and challenging, and it’s up to you to make sure you keep yourself moving and staying hydrated. Osteoarthritis is no fun, but following these simple tips can make it a bit more tolerable.

When to Seek Help

Sometimes, despite our best efforts, osteoarthritis can cause us to seek professional help. There are some warning signs that indicate that it may be time to consult a healthcare professional. For instance, persistent or worsening pain that doesn’t improve with rest, over-the-counter meds, or home remedies may be a sign that you need professional intervention.

If you find yourself having trouble with everyday activities like walking, climbing stairs, gripping objects or standing from a seated position, it would be wise to reach out for help.

If you suffer from a limited range of motion, feeling “stuck” or unable to fully move a joint, or if you experience grinding, popping, or locking sensations when trying to move, seek professional care.

If osteoarthritis is damaging your quality of life, reach out to a professional physical therapist. A PT can evaluate your condition and create a customized treatment plan to help you improve flexibility and joint function, build strength, and manage your pain.
