Eat your way to combatting the effects of fibromyalgia by Jackie Manning, ARNP

Do you suffer from the yucky, draining aches of fibromyalgia? While the cause is still shrouded in mystery, a large body of research has identified different treatment options that may ease the pain of fibromyalgia in patients. Diet in conjunction with a treatment here at Strive can help to reduce symptoms and bring about much needed relief. This healthy diet, in fact, has the potential to inspire wellness in general, so read on!

DIET TIPS FOR FIBROMYALGIA:

-Water: Healthy adults should drink a recommended 6-8 glasses of water daily.

-Omega-3: Nuts and fish contain Omega-3, bringing much needed anti-inflammatory effects on the body.

-Magnesium: Research has found that many who suffer from fibromyalgia are deficient in magnesium. Many symptoms of fibromyalgia are consistent with symptoms of magnesium deficiency. Good food sources for magnesium, include dark green leafy vegetables, nuts like cashews and almonds, and soybeans.

-Lean Protein: Fish or chicken are high in protein and contain less saturated fat than red meats.

-Fruits & Vegetables: Fruits and veggies are full of antioxidants and vitamins for your nervous system health. Fill your tummy with leafy greens like kale or spinach and fruits of all colors.

WHAT PROBABLY WON’T HELP:

-Sugar & Caffeine: Since fibromyalgia can cause fatigue, many sufferers reach for caffeine to boost energy. Unfortunately, while that cup of Joe offers a short-term boost, the high is usually followed by a longer period of fatigue. It can also interfere with a restful night’s sleep—something that might already be a struggle for patients.

-Food allergens: If you suspect you have food sensitivities, getting tested is a great first step. Knowledge is power. From pinpointing the cause, healing can take place.

-Monosodium glutamate (MSG): Most of us are familiar with MSG as an additive in prepackaged foods. The high salt content has been linked to swelling and pain in fibromyalgia patients. Although it may sound like no fun, some sacrifice may be necessary for healing.

ADDITIONAL HEALTHY HABITS TO INCLUDE:

-Exercise: Movements like swimming, walking or stretching can help to loosen muscles and reduce stiffness, leading to higher quality nightly sleep and higher energy levels.

-Weight maintenance: Pain often leads to a more sedentary lifestyle. The combination of less movement and certain medications can contribute to obesity among fibromyalgia patients. Maintaining a healthy diet, regular exercise and 6-8 hours of sleep nightly can promote a healthy, happy lifestyle.
