If you’re dealing with a pain in the butt right now, it could be from any number of things. But if you’re dealing specifically with a pain in your butt—literally—it might be piriformis syndrome. The piriformis muscle is a thick band like muscle that runs diagonally across the buttocks region. This muscle becomes inflamed from activities and lifestyle habits, such as carrying a wallet in your back pocket, sitting with your leg under your bottom, playing pickle ball or tennis, or enduring a fall or other injury to the rear.
With piriformis syndrome, even sitting on hard surfaces or taking a leisurely stroll can be a pain in the butt! This syndrome is very commonly misdiagnosed as a lower back problem, which leads to a treatment that offers no relief, since it isn’t addressing the true pain point.
